<VV> Spark Plug Hole

I had one similar problem repaired by a wise machinist. He first took a hunk of appropriate steel (could use aluminum, I guess), and machined the OD to a common fine thread then tapped the head for a tight plug fit. I think he cooled the plug prior to inserting it. Inserted the plug, tapped the plug for the correct spark-plug size and used a tiny set screw from the out side to prevent the plug from unscrewing..
I did not observe the procedure, but it was to a rebuild 140 head with R. Sedman head work. I did not want too start with a different head.

I've got a stripped spark plug hole that has so much metal removed, the special Heli-Coil tap just slides in without making any thread for the coil. Anyone know of an alternative to having the hole welded up and re-drilled and tapped? Thanks in advance.
