In California the seller has 10 days to notify the DMV of the sale of the vehicle. Purchaser has the same 10 days.

That's not the only bad thing that can happen
I sold a 67 Monza to a guy in Pensacola back in 2004.
I received a letter from the FLA Highway Patrol about my Abandoned car.
Good thing i didn't just go and try to claim the car.
The guy apparently didn't change the title or register it, just put a plate on it and was driving it and had no insurance on it.
He was in involved in a accident and left the scene. He removed the tag
an abandoned the car.
sinceIi was technically still the registered owner (they tracked me down via the
Vin #)
Luckily I had a Signed copy of the bill of sale which I was more than happy to share.

I'm glad the trip to Australia was uneventful, but the seller was really
out on a limb as Mike said. Last fall our new pastor (from
Michigan) sold his really rusty--holes everywhere--Honda (did I say it was from
Michigan) to a family down on their luck who needed a $300 car to get back to
Michigan from Maryland. He asked for my advice and I told him to be sure
to take the plates off and let them get a temporary Michigan plate to get
home. Last week he sheepishly told me he had received a certified letter
from a town in Michigan that he owed $1,900.00 in fines and storage costs for
"his" Honda. Apparently it was abandoned in Michigan and he is on the hook
as the last registered owner.
