i have done many of these , with no problems. in fact there are pictures
somewhere on the web of me doing it. first thing is get a shop vac running
close to where you are working. i ground the plastic end of the smaller
vacuum hose at an angle to get it closer. pull the head off , pull the
cylinder off the piston , stuff a rag carefully arranged in the hole , so when
you pull it out ,any chips come with it. other tip is grind most of the
wings off the plastic tool used to insert the helicoil for clearances needed. i
did not use the full length helicoil , i cut them down to @ 3/4 of the
hole depth. i also did not go the full depth of the hole with the tap
i used a wobble extension on a straight 3/8 drive tap driver. go very
slow , let chips get sucked up by the vacuum cleaner. these taps are 4 flute ,
so if it binds at all! , stop! , back it out , and go back in. it may take
a few times back and forth.
if i can find the detailed pictures i took last time i will make sure they
get posted on the cnycorvair.com website soon.
the job sounds scary , but it has worked well for me on several "i give
up!!" jobs very well. use loctite on the stud , pay close attention to how
deep it goes .
make sure you get the little tab at the end of the helicoil with a magnet
after you break it with a small (magnatized) screwdriver. otherwise , you
will have a little piece of steel inside the motor.
hope this helps. just keep all the dirt away from the cylinder hole and
things should be fine.
let common sense prevail...
regards, tim colson
