On Home Improvment, it was not a continuity error.

 

If you watched the episode....

Tim was filming in a junk yard.  There he found "his" Early Coupe - primer grey, I think, that he owned at one point in his fake past.  

 

Jill bought him the Blue LM Convert (Larry Shapiro's car).  Sold it, or traded it off.

 

Then he found out the Early Coupe (which he wanted) was crushed.
