All brands had "stripper models" with the base motor and minimal trim.
But don't forget Willy's with their 4-banger.
not to mention the Henry J and the Allstate.
Metropolitan, and from England some Anglia's and Thames made the trek over here.
What about the Isetta?

Gas was cheap, but there were also a lot of old used cars on car lots from the 30's and 40's and earlier back then. 
Think modern times, we still have plenty of used cars floating around from 20-40 years ago!
