 The Wrights weren't tinkerers in this sense. They did honest to God, scientific development. They tested existing theories, they did the engineering, they tested that, came up with impressive data, and their success was utterly predictable because of this great body of work. 

As a holder of many patents, the intellectual property world is a relatively bizarre environment. It has little to do with science!

Maybe Kearns would fit the bill as a tinkerer?
