As to why, maybe he could't push a clutch pedal anymore. I may be in the same situation some day, and will have to convert my car to an automatic - or not be able to drive it. Many other reasons for such a conversion. Don't question someone else's reasons. Just accept it. To me it's no big deal.
BTW, this car could probably benefit from the automatic floor shift conversion kit available from Clark's.

LOL it also says it's a V-8 while there is clearly a vair engine (4 carb) 
under the engine lid.  Man does that stock LM auto shifter look goofy on 
that home made console!
