Sure Ray, not much to it ...
I did so many of these in the past I cut the ring off a Chevrolet front hub, made a bracket
which fit on my drill press to use as a drill guide. But, you could use a thin piece of sheet
metal, pick a center point and scribe the bolt circle of your choice. Lay out a 4, 5, or 6 bolt
pattern on that circle then cut out the center hole to just fit your hub.
Now you can simply use a center punch to dimple all of your hubs and drums then drill
the holes for the studs. Choose the best studs in diameter and length to suit the wheels
you have selected. The shoulder of the stud should be about the same length as the
stock studs as it will be going through the same hubs and drums. Select a drill size that
will be a fairly heavy press fit. It will be possible to drive the studs in with a heavy hammer.
The amount of body work required depends on how close to 'flush with the body' you really
want to get. Wheels for disc brake cars usually fit drum brake cars even though they can be
somewhat different. Front wheel drive cars have wheels that are definitely different in
offset / backspace When you order your new wheels you will be able to specify the
backspace / offset. You must calculate that yourself by deciding how much farther out you
wish to have the wheels. Mock up the setup using your stock wheel then measure the
distance it is away from the mount surface. Compare the stock wheel width to the new
wheel width then, working from back to front, figure your offset.

Ken,
Can you elaborate on the process of drilling the hubs for a five bolt
pattern? Mostly what I'm interested in is what do I have to take apart...
I imagine I'll be installing studs in the holes after drilling... what sizes
(drill and studs diameter and length) to use etc.
Do you have any insights you can share on how much modification is
required for various width/backspace sizes? I've been shopping around and
it looks like pretty much all the aftermarket wheels available have less
backspace than Bryan Blackwell's sight suggests.. most are about 3.75
inches of backspace on 7" wheels and he suggests 4.5 for 7" wide wheels, the
6" wide wheels usually have less and he suggests 4". I'm happy to roll the
wheel well lip, and fine with trimming non visible areas (inside the wells),
but I don't want to have to do any real modification to the visible part of
the body.
