LOW Voltage kills  components...even old 1960's items...   not  good!



Ditto what Matt said.  It doesn't take too much cranking with a low  
battery to overheat a starter.  Low voltage equals higher current for the  same 
amount of work.  Keep the battery charged properly and many old car  problems 
just go away.
