Scotty,

Hilton Head Island, easily referred to as "HHI" is off the coast of  
South Carolina.  It's up the coast from Savannah, Georgia, which is up  
the coast from Florida. HHI is down the coast from Charleston South  
Carolina.

HHI is known for beautiful beaches, but maybe even more, the fact that  
the trees weren't cleared when it was developed. There are few high- 
rise buildings as there are rules about building height and color. The  
result is a beautiful vacation place. Lots of golf courses, good  
restaurants, shade, etc. There are bike trails all over the island.  
The biggest downside of all the trees and landscaping is that when you  
go out to find a business, store or restaurant, it can be hard to find  
them as they are usually hidden behind some trees!

Like most waterside vacation spots, HHI can be expensive. A large  
luxury house on the beach can rent for over $10K per week in the  
summer. Bt you can also get very nice townhouse-style villas or condo- 
type rooms in resorts for $1,000-1,300. During the off-season, you  
might pay that for a month. Naturally, there are all kinds of boating  
activities as well as dolphin cruises, nature hikes, etc. We love  
looking for alligators which are present in some areas.
