<VV> Ignition : Porsche vs. Corvair firing order ?

The cylinders aren't numbered the same. On a Corvair, the even ones are on one side, the odd ones are on the other side. On a Porsche, one side is 1,2,3, the other is 4,5,6. So, no consecutive firing cylinders on the same side. Would be rough as a cob if they did!

OK, but it seems that using "1, 6, 2, 4, 3, 5" the "6, 2" and "3, 5" are consecutive on the same side of the engine ?

Am I missing something ? (Cylinders are numbered the same, right ?)

Actually, untrue. Both engines fire the same way, except one may be backwards from the other.

Both engine fire left-right-left-right-left-right.
Both engines fire up (or down) each bank.
Both engines fire opposing cylinders 180 degrees apart on the distributor.

As I said, there are only two possible firing orders for flat 6s, and one is the reverse of the other. The fact that these engines have 4 corner cylinders and only 2 center cylinders doesn't really enter into it. These are both even firing inline 3 cylinder engines out of phase by 60 degrees distributor rotation.

Any other firing order or crankpin arrangement makes for one rough running sumbitch! Ask Buick about their early V6s!

Hmmm... Thanks for the info -

Porsche doesn't seem to be as well-balanced in its firing order as the Vair, being "corner, corner, corner, middle, corner, corner," as opposed to the Corvair's "corner, middle, corner, corner, middle, corner" ?

Corvair looks like a good doubles tennis game than does the Porsche, but I guess there is something to it on the order of "form follows function" ?

Assuming the cylinders are numbered the same, on any horizontally opposed 6 cylinder engine, there are only 2 possible firing orders, one being the reverse of the other.

For a 911, here's the cylinder numbering:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_valve_adjust/911_valve_adjust_pic1.jpg
And the firing order is 1, 6, 2, 4, 3, 5.

Right !

If you're used to inline-6 engines, that would have made sense, but not on

Corvair !

Does Porsche use the same firing order ?

I makes more sense when the viewed from above:

In this one I colorized the hard to follow in black-and-white manual

Here I tried to put it all together a while back to see ignition, starter,

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could proof read it for me to make sure

it's right ?

It was pulled apart when I first did it, but maybe it needs to be updated ?

Hope it helps and thanks for any input you can afford me !
