The thinking is called 'shingling' no doubt taken from the order in which houses are roofed. GM engineering goes to quite a bit of effort to make sure lap joints are properly 'shingled' throughout the vehicle to avoid water infiltration. Upon investigation one would be quite surprised to see how many 'reverse shingle' conditions are present on Japanese designed vehicles over the years ...

underneath the lower molding if it was the molding placed on top of the
