<VV> Early Question

Smitty Says; Here's a question that I challenge any of you to give a straight answer for. At the outer end of the control arm and behind the backing plate there is a spacer, less than a 1/4 inch thick with 4 holes in it to slip over the four studs. Over the years cars have been found with one on one side, none, or one on each side. Obviously the disparity of one on one side only is intended as the parts book shows it that way. Manuals are no help at all.
So, what is their purpose. What were they trying to compensate for. And, why the difference from side to side.
