Dave,
I have a '63 Spyder that the sway bar brackets wore out. I replaced them with used late model brackets.
The late brackets are much stronger. Put new bushings on the bar side and the stock sway bar fits fine.
In answer to whether late sway bars will fit, they will, and I have a thicker '65 bar on my '63 Spyder.
I say it corners better. Also the late sway bars are more common to find used. I'm sure you can find a local member
who has at least one or two old late sway bars, with the "dog bones" still attatched.
Good luck getting the old top bolts off. With a littlle patience and maybe some heat, you will get them off.
