<VV> Late head on early

I recently came across a pair of late 110 heads that I'm planning on installing on my 64 110.  I've been told to use hose clamps for spacers due to the thinner wall cylinders of the 64. I get the basic idea but doesn't the gear mechanism of the clamp get in the way? Anyone got a pic of this, or good diagram, or clear explanation of this process? Or am I just over thinking it?
