Seems that there was quite a thread on this list a while back on the 
original coatings for the mag fan -- no known reason why some were 
silver and some were black, but they were -- on the black satin finished 
ones the coating was thicker and more plasticy-rubbery than just normal 
paint, but the exact nature of the coating was not determined.  Probably 
anti-corrosive, anti-sparking ...
