<VV> Greenbrier sighting

My kids watch a cartoon called Fineus and Ferb on the Disney Channel. This morning a light green Greenbier was featured in the cartoon. It performed some amazing feats, considering someone had stolen the engine. The girls saved the day driving the Greenbier! Go Disney!

Daniel, before removing anything and while your next compression test, do it
nce, then put some oil in that cyl and do it again. You can tell if it is
ings or valves that way. I would still pull the valves and if possible lap
hem in.
What was your initial problem/ i lost the thread, but have gotten very
nterested now I see you have a similar problem as my 102 hp 62 engine. I
ave compression in the 150's accept for #1 which is at 125 with oil, 115
efore, and #4 at 135. I'm thinking its time for an overhaul on mine since
he case has never been apart since 1962. Mark Durham

Just coming back to civilization !
Switched carbs and, the troubble remained on left bank so, was not carb
problem. Did a compression check and cylinder # 2 showed 120 psi while all
others were at 150 psi. Next step will be readjusting valves on # 2 and,
maybe left it with some clattering for a while, then readjust and make a new
sniffer test. If it doesn?t work, well... will need to remove left head.
Hope to have it done by this weekend.
Thanks a lot to you VV guys !!

Removed both carb tops and checked gas level from top and, it was equal

any
change but, the venturi continued dripping at high rpm, showing a very
low decrease on CO emissions (6.4 to 5.8 %). As a reference, the right
bank
exhaust shows 2.1 % CO. Both venturies are 0.024" idle jet, 0.045" main
well
air bleed, and 0.075" idle air bleed.
Daniel - Perhaps something else (external) is causing the
left carb to do that, perhaps a pulsing in the intake. Just to make sure it
is the left side carb, swap them left to right. (I know that is a bunch of
work,
but if the problem goes with it, you KNOW it is the carb itself.) I kind of
agree with Matt, it sounds like something in the cluster or bleeds. Once
the
carb comes off idle only running, like at the 2000 RPM you mentioned,
something may be restricting the air flow, causing the mixture to go rich -
but
since you see the leaking of gas out of the cluster. (PS - Using your
timing light by shining it down the carb throat is a great way to see
ambient
flow - it really freezes the fuel!) Perhaps your fuel pump is overcoming
the
needle and seat on the left carb, raising the level a little bit. If you
have
another needle/seat available, that is worth changing out, just in
case.

Sounds like you've got it under control. What I was having trouble with is
etting the carbs set up so the thing would run right. Even after a detailed
ebuild of both and a replacement of the worn out distributer it ran poorly,
nd I found when syncing the carbs the left bubble would osilate up a down a
ittle and the right would osilate up and down twice as much. It is using a
it of oil, the two cyls with lower compression are but not fouling the
lugs yet, they just show a different color, and I also have a bit of a
iston slap on both I do not like. I've put a 5W 40 Full Synthetic oil with
he ZDDP in it which helps to plug up the rings. I initially put a 5W 30 in
nd it ran like crap, and I could not sync the engine.
o, I'm thinking that I will do a bit of driving this spring, have it
hecked out by some more seasoned corvair owners in the area to make sure
hat I hear is real, and see what goes from there. If the guys concur with
y suspicions, then maybe this fall I plan for a full teardown and rebuild,
've got a 64 case that is good for the longer crank and 64 cylinders, so I
m going to put those in and a new OT-20 cam in it, maybe some other
pgrades. We shall see. It actually runs strong and sounds good under
ower, its the extra knocks (and its not valve train, I know what that
ounds like and have used a hearing probe to find the slapping pistons, and
ot the fuel pump,)I don't remember my original corvair having. I remember
t being quiet.

Well... in my case it was on trying to tune GB engine for state
emissions testing. That?s why I got my own 4 gases "sniffer" and a wide band
AFR gauge. So, at going to official inspection, my Vairs are pre-tested. No
big deal at the USA as Corvairs don't need to pass emissions testing in most
states but here, in my state (Jalisco, Mexico) it is a must to pass
emissions tests every year on passenger vehicles and twice a year on pickup
trucks (would like to live in USA, just for this reason).
In your case, if your car is not consuming oil, still has good fuel
comsuption and you feel comfortable with the engine power, live with it but,
48 years without a rebuild seems awesome.

Thanks to Turner Classic Movies - I just finished the last two-thirds of
Bullet - for the Umpteenth time. As I have been classically trained to do,
I looked for Corvairs throughout - and there is a lot of driving around -
even at normal speeds - in that movie. And I saw a few of them, an early
white Convertible and others. So, my question for the group: What kind of
"non-police" car does Steve McQueen drive in that movie? Besides
the Mustang,
that is.
Wasn't it his girlfriend's Porsche?
I remember him asking for a car from the precinct motor pool and the
IC said none were available.

Speaking of Lakewoods and wagons, do we have a registry of these unique cars
I'd be curious to see if my previous treasures are still in good hands -
opefully in some CORSA member's garage or driveway ?
I've had a few and lost track of where they are !
