<VV> Engine building - valve spring installed height

Question for today - on my 140 engine build, using basic small block 
chev valve springs (2.08" free height as per Corvair book) with Elgin 
perf. type steel caps, 304 cam, should I stick with stock 1-21/32" 
spring height or something different? I need about .090 in shims (seems 
like a lot) to get stock spring height with the Elgin caps, or .050 with 
stock caps.
