if it has been slammed into gear a lot , or done the quick back and forth
between reverse and drive , there are 2 VERY small buttons on the rear pump
that due all the work of moving the car. they plow a large grove in the
part they drive , then shear off. also the main input shaft has a small die
cast star as a drive. either one can wear and cause a clunk. if engine idle
is too fast it is hard on those parts also. if you study a picture of the
internals of a powerglide , or better yet tear one down , you will probably
pay more attention to how you treat them? amazing how tough they are for
how simple the guts are. another cause (start here!) can be the modulator
, or the dreaded "E" clip in the throttle body. the E clip job can be
done without taking the tranny apart , but i would say it oughta have the kit
put in it. (tear it down ) if you want best reliability. check for vacuum
to modulator also.
regards, tim colson.
