It is more like:

There are only two possible positions between 1 and 2 or between 3 and 4.
It is not all 4 gears in a straight line.
On the PG, it is like:

D
L
with considerably less travel distance in the position of the lever between
gears - thereby a much greater chance of hitting the wrong gear. Probably
part of the reason that in the later '60s (67?) a notch was placed between
some gears - to avoid accidental engagement.
Perhaps a pattern like:

L
might fly - just printing it on the knob, I mean.
