Hi Carl,
I agree with Matt. Just put some loctite (enough to cover the hole completely around the edge) and be done with it. Though this is a potential oil drip, it is not a guaranteed leak such as non viton o rings.

>Hi everyone,

>I have just read with interest an article written by Milton Binon that has been reproduced on the CORSA Corvair Techinical Guide. Mitlon discusses a problem with oil leaking from the rear engine housing on almost every Corvair engine he has ever seen.
>
>He goes on to explain that he only successfully fixed this oil leak after taking the rear engine housing to a welding shop and having the welding shop people 'Heli-Ar weld the hole' shut. The hole, that leaks its seems is where the shaft that holds the driven gear is located.
>
>The engine for our Corvair is rebuilt, completely reassembled and almost ready to reinstall. It looks better than brand new as it sits bolted to the engine standard
>
>My concerned is however that in this rebuild I did nothing to the rear engine housing, apart from a detailed cleaning and the use of new gaskets I did nothing else to it.
>
>After reading Milton's advice I am seriously thinking that I should perhaps back track, remove this rear engine housing and have it welded shut so that I can avoid a future oil leak that from all accounts occurs on almost every Corvair engine. Its unfortunate as I feel I am going over previous work but it seems if I don't that my nice clean engine will not be clean for very long after its first start.
