Yeah, but the challengea between a 12 inch cable vs. a 12 foot cable
are rather different

Good point Jim , and by '67 Camaros with console shifted Powerglides
had a
cable shifter.

Don't forget, the 63 Tempest PG had a "Park" feature. So GM could have
used it
on the Corvair if they wanted to.
It operated via a 2nd lever on the front of the console.
