Sorry, but I just can't agree with this AT ALL. I was not allowed access to nor copies of statistics concerning the first generation air bags but, in the engineering world, the word gets around. Mr. Nader, and his influence on Congress, 'gave' us air bags ... and some totally imaginary specifications to which they must perform. Those first 'bags killed far more people than they saved. It took years for the car companies to get Congress to allow the second generations air bags. These are not as likely to kill but they do take many lives ... and not just children's lives.
If you want to thank someone it should be the metallurgical engineers and their contributions with steel qualities. On the other hand, now that cars are more able to stand up to collisions the speeds that they are driven and the recklessness of today's drivers generate accidents that have become far more dramatic.

I think we should all thank RN for taking a role in making ALL cars safer. That book was nothing more than an indictment on industrialization. 1 Chapter was on the early model Corvair. Whereas didn't he write an entire book on the (lack of) safety of the air cooled VW?
