<VV> Spyder in the Keys, with Oil Filter Leak

The Spyder has been performing perfectly throughout the trip (for those uninitiated, I've been in the Keys for a week, down from St. Pete, FL). However, yesterday, the vendor-brand, reproduction oil filter started leaking. I did not bother tightening, as experience has shown their filter, once leaking, does not respond to lighting. Rather, I installed the NAPA filter I had brought along as a spare. Mr. tech guy, from the vendor, if you are listening, you guys need to get this issue solved. Most of your other "stuff" is top-notch (I should know; I've been buying from your boss since he worked off his kitchen table in the 1970s), However, there is a problem with your oil filters beginning to leak after some use. I would not normally mention this issue, online, but my private messages have, apparently, gone unheard. This is a public service message for you and your customers. Thank you.

The windows are what enable this method. Doors without windows would be
uch safer so a good option would be to opaque the inside of the windows
ear the center.

I have in my junk box a pair of almost-matched Solex PICT carbs that
vidently came off Volkswagens years ago. They have electric chokes
nd appear to be complete and probably functional, given a bit of
leanup. Are any of you aware of any attempts to rig Solex carbs for a
orvair? My Rochesters are reasonably functional but are very old, and
think the throttle shafts are a bit worn & sloppy.
Thanks in advance for any ideas, cautions, etc.

All: I don't remember why, but many years ago I did internet search on the
on Trap family. The Sound of Music is mostly fiction. What almost made me
all off my chair laughing was this: When the Von Trap's decided it was
ime to leave Austria, they walked across the street and got on the train to
witzerland.

I've owned a late '65 tele steering column and steering box for more
han 10 years and am finally ready to install it. I couldn't figure out
ow the lock mechanism works but think I have it figured out now after
ooking at a Corvette web site that sells steering parts. According to
heir diagram the locking mechanism inside the steering column consists
f a locking rod and a wedge. I have either misplaced the locking rod
fter having moved 5 times since I acquired the unit, or it may have
een missing when I bought it.
I think I could fabricate the rod from an old clutch cable rod but need
o know exact dimensions and any required shape at the ends -- tapered,
quared off, etc. I'm also wondering about the wedge. Is it something
hat could not be removed without removing the pin that holds the two
ieces of the shaft together? Is it likely the wedge is still in
here? Or, am I completely wrong about how this thing locks?
I would be very appreciative to receive any insight into this matter.
hanks in advance.

I want to thank all those parties who responded to my below questions about the
amage to my engine. Your ?virtual vairs? group did an outstanding job
esponding with several suggestions. Business and some holiday travel this
onth will not allow me time to work on the engine for a while. When things
alm down after the first of the year, I?ll start checking out the suggestions
iven and be happy to report back my findings.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays to all members,

have recently acquired a 1962 Rampside with #2 piston burned from what
ppeared to be detonation. All other pistons/cylinders looked normal.
fter replacing the piston and honing the cylinder to clean up the aluminum
ransfer, the same #2 piston became burned due to detonation. The engine
ould idle fine at 14 degree timing, but with lack of power. At about 18
egree timing it seemed to run reasonably and with good power, but with
inging noticeable when starting from a dead stop. I have replaced the #2
iston again, this time with a different used cylinder and still notice the
etonation from start, but haven't driven it much until I can learn more
bout what's going on.

When I replaced the first piston, I also changed rings and bearings and
imed the camshaft to the crankshaft as accurately as I could determine.
his seemed to be a challenge. I used keyway positions checking with
achine squares. Since such advanced distributor timing is required, I am
till wondering if this is an issue. What is the best technique for this
iming operation? But why did the same cylinder position have the problem -
oincidence?

I have been rebuilding conventional water-cooled engines for decades, for a
hile professionally, so I know engine basics but something is eluding me
ere. Perhaps something unique to Corvairs. Knowing that
re-ignition/detonation can initiate from carbon build up and/or sharp
dges, I wire brushed all combustion areas, valves, and valve cavities
lean prior to assembly. All fins were cleaned to avoid hot spots. The
heet metal air deflectors are in place. The thermostat properly opens the
ir deflector valve when the engine heats up.

Can someone help with some suggestions?
