<VV> Strange Rear Engine Housing

I'm helping a fellow club member with the 102 HP engine in his van.  The engine which appears to never have been apart has a strange rear engine housing.  It is much heavier than any other I have seen but almost all my experience is with 164 CI engines.  The strangest thing about this rear engine housing is that there is what looks to be a factory installed small heavy metal wire/piece that limits the travel inward of the oil pressure regulator.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  I'll try to post a picture tomorrow.
