Sounds like a plan, but maybe a postage scale would work too, used 
judiciously ?

Or does a fish scale work on different angles, not just vertical ?

You can make a really crude one that will work fine with a 1 foot lever and 
a fish scale.  I found a digital fish scale pretty cheap.
