<VV> Corvair steering box lash adjust screw turns with locknut ?

Corvair steering box lash adjust screw turns with locknut ?

Can the nut and screw removed and separated without damaging the box ?

I can't adjust the screw any further than the locknut allows (CW).

Is there a secret here ?  I don't want to caue any more damage than may 
already have been done !
