All I ever had to do was participate in activities which involved
guarding some odd holes in the ground with mysterious objects inside
them surrounded by three fences inside of which some bored sorts
would walk circles carrying weapons, as if somebody would wanna steal
a hole in the ground with a big concrete lid on it, and the objects
inside were too big to carry off anyway.

Me neither... if the bad guys had decided to shoot something at
those odd holes (and we were pretty sure they know the holes were
there), I wouldn't have had a chance to buy a half-dozen or so
Corvairs. On occasion the locals (we'd check them out with
binoculars) would pause in their daily routines and stare down the
way at those concrete lids with stark blank expressions on their
faces. It was sobering. I don't think they liked the holes... or
us, or both, never was really clear which.

Google Maps actually lets a person see that spot now, fences are gone
although the holes are still there... evidently empty now with grass
growing around the concrete lids and nobody around watching anymore.

During those times, it has occurred to me that somewhere someplace
(before I rescued it 11 years later) my '60 4-door probably still had
paint on it and may have even still shined. And I acquired that car
26 years ago... I seem to be getting older or something, judging by
the years I can count that passed since those entertaining times and
vehicular accumulations of all things Corvair.
