Anecdotally :: my original 66 140 vair was traded off after 55000 miles,
no troubles with mechanical pump.

I loved that car, so got back into corvair fever about 1986 ... I wound up
with about 12 fuel pumps, some of which worked occasionally; I kept all of
them and a tool box in the trunk (g)... the new ones failed, the old
junkyard jewels got me all over the midwest in my 69 daily vair.

Then ... the good ones became available again, last bot one about 2002 for
a lucky spare not needed, still working.Buy from a Corvair Vendor, not your
local chinese parts merchant.

OTOH, if you like gadgets, the electric pump will help you get started
better, big reason is that our new fuels tend to vaporize out of the fuel
bowls after a few hours of non-running, and the electric pump can fill them
back up faster than an unprimed mechanical pump... in my opinion.

Vair fuel pumps repeatalo again, good for our souls. ken campbell,
