Before panic sets in it might be a good idea to consider the starter drive.  Failing to engage or even a loud screach is often a problem within the starter drive unit.  There will be no visible sign on the unit.  The starter drive is not readily repaired but quite easily replaced ... without removal of the engine / transmission.
