In my 62 four door I have been running a two-carb 140 HP behind the 62 transaxel for more than ten years without any problems. This includes many, many trips from Boulder, CO to Tucson, AZ and plenty of cruises through the mountains. Absolutely no problem with the transaxel or the shifting. I wouldn't hesitate to use a 164 inch engine with an early PG transaxel. Autocrossing and speed events might bring out issues, but for everyday driving this is a good combination.
