Robert and Carlton,
Unlike ALL other Corvairs, the turbo Corvairs came from the factory with NO vacuum advance istalled, but only pressure retard. That means that you're driving with FIXED ignition timing until either about 4000 rpm is reached OR boost is reached. If you do a lot of driving under NON-boost conditions where mileage and part throttle response are important, then read my Turbocharging chapter in the Corvair Basics manual to find out about adding some vacuum advance to improve non-boosted mileage, unless, of course, you don't mind spending money for gasoline.<GGGG>
While the American-Pi unit is better (especially when you use the visual display on the dash to indicate just how much and how long your retard is lasting), the Carter EKE will work to mostly eliminate detonation IF it's installed correctly. You need to adjust the sensitivity so as to eliminate nearly all the "pinging", but don't go overboard so far the the EKE is always in the retard mode.

On the subject of anti-knock, can anyone tell me about this product?

My Corsa sometimes knocks when the engine has gotten a little hot. It's ok
f you back off and let the CHTs cool off a bit. Also, I suspect the
ressure retard takes a moment to kick in, so you can sometimes "punch it"
o get past the bit of rattle while going to full boost. I wonder if some
odern technology could help the knocking. Maybe even improve gas mileage a
it.

Hi All,
o break up the recent chatter about Corsa and the convention I have a real
echnical question to ponder?
Do any of the VV folks have experience with the older Carter (EKE) Engine
nock Eliminator? In particular on a turbo engine? After two years of
wnership I am finally getting around to addressing the issue of detonation
hat I have with my particular engine.
The engine was totally rebuilt when I purchased it. It has a stock YH carb.
he turbo looks stock, but is not. It has a early intake housing 3817254
ith a RayJay 302B40 cartridge and exhaust housing. It has the stock
istributor with the pressure retard. With this combination the turbo will
tart winding up very easily even when going through normal shifting.
The YH carb. was getting fussy and has been recently rebuilt and adjusted by
extremely knowledgeable and competent Corvair mechanic. It runs great for
ormal driving. But when I am out cruising, getting a little frisky and put
t to it, I definitely get detonation. So I have to back off the long pedal.
always use 92, 93 or even 94 octane fuel. I have tried "all" of the major
ctane boosters and they basically had no benefit in my opinion. The only
uel that actually did not produce detonation was some CAM II fuel I once
ried out in it. It definitely like that stuff! But I cannot afford that for
aily driving.
I am aware of the modifications to the YH carb. that are possible. However,
was wondering if the old Carter EKE would possibly cure the problem for
e? I know about the Safegaurd units , but those are really big bucks.
Any words of experience?
