<VV> [fastvair] Distributor end play

Fact. Just watch the rotor move as the distributor shaft is engaging the gear during installation.

However the shaft should rise up during the engine run. How much per RPM? Don't know. Chevy engineers figured it out 50 years ago.

As the shaft moves up and down it is on two helical gears. Moving up and down does change timing. I've seen as much as 10 degrees.

Actually, during operation, the shaft is thrust upward against the thrust
washer, and by non trivial forces. The shaft, after all, does drive the oil
pump. As long as the shaft doesn't move upward so much it crashes the rotor or
other mechanical problems, the end play should have no effect on timing
stability.

It is sort of critical if you?have to little clearance. The shaft will not
expand near what the housing will and if the clearance is to close then the
shaft could bind. But .020-.030 is probably a good number to shoot for.
Excessive clearance will give you erratic timing.

I always set mine at around .010 to .020. It is not real critical, you just

want ti loose enough that it does not bind, and tight enough that it does

not do what yours is doing now!
