Twice as much is nothing compared to a warranty claim for leaking O rings, which there were PLENTY!!
Not sure if the SRBs used Viton, but it wasn't cold enough for any of the commercially available formulations to fail based solely on material properties.

If there is a weakness to Viton, it's low temperature flexibility.
Yep.....something that NASA proved conclusively with the Challenger
disaster!
However, choosing the right Viton should eliminate any problems. I wonder
what GM considers the low temperature limit?
I believe the testing criteria was -30 F...also, in keeping with the HRPT
debate...Viton costs twice as much as Buna!
