Seems like the normal price *is* an arm and a leg, plus your firstborn 
son, so just an arm and a leg sounds like you've already got the "good 
price". FC bearing prices include a wife with a job.

Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a car with good axles, swap the axles, 
and resell the car.  Repacking some used but servicable bearings with 
modern synthetic grease seems the most economical solution.
