Started to rain here. No more test drives tonight. Made a vodka tonic. Now properly fortified, will go out to garage and stare down evil red plastic thingy. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Dare I be the first to introduce the new fellow to the horrid red plastic thingy?
Late models have a terminal on the frame rail near the battery that connects the battery with the main red lead that powers the car.
It's a single stud imbedded in a RED plastic surround...

Thanks to everyone. I found the ground strap, snugged the screw. I'm not
certain whether/how well it's connected at the ground lug on the instrument
cluster. I like the idea of a dedicated ground wire from the lug to a good
chassis ground. Even if it doesn't turn out to be the root cause of all my
instrument evils, it's a smart move. I guess I need to pull the whole durn
dash out and do that.
Dare the newbie ask what the horrid red plastic thingy is? Or will I need to
brace myself with a vodka tonic first?

Add a dedicated ground wire, from the dash ground to the chassis ground,
and never worry about it again! Make sure it's long enough to connect it
with the dash in or out.

Where do I find the grounding strap at?
Jay,
There is a flat strip that is hard against the plastic backing of the dash
that drops down from the back of the gauge cluster on the right side of the
?steering column to the first bottom dash screw to the right of the
steering ?column (the screw points up and is one of the ones that secures the
dash
to the ?dash frame).
Good luck.
