I also have an item I'm not sure what it's for just to the left of the
steering column under the dash. It's seems to be an off/on switch for
something, but does not affect anything that I can see. It's a red knob that
looks like it should light up if the car overheated or something to that
effect. Any idea? It's a '66 140 conv with A/C.

Before 1967, when the 4-way flashers were added as standard, there was a
dealer installed accessory 4-way flasher for the 65-66 models. It mounted
vertically under the left side of the column, with the switch assembly
sticking up behind the dash. The bracket allowed the red plastic indicator to hang
down where it could be seen from the drivers seat. The plastic indicator
was also the actuator for the flashers. Just pull it out (or downward,
depending on how yours is mounted) - to activate the 4-way flashers. The wiring
for the unit just snaps in by disconnecting the feed wires to the steering
column and adding the mating connectors of the flasher in between the dash
feed and the column wiring. There is also a 12 volt feed wire to hook to
the battery connector on the fuse box. - I have had a few of these over the
years.
