<VV> engine (only) removal for LMs?

Just make sure the block of wood spans the whole diff top and doesn't place 
 the load on the differential sheet metal cover alone.
 
And as Matt said, put lots of duct tape on your vise grips before you pull  
on the shaft to remove it.
