How big (what gauge) does a battery cable have to be?

Years ago I got a new set of battery cables when I converted to a side  
terminal battery. Today I went shopping to replace the negative cable.  
Mine was a 2 gauge cable. All I could find was a 4 gauge unless I  
ordered one. This is only a 20" cable. It would seem that a 4 gauge is  
sufficient. I don't know what the original cable is. What do you guys  
think?
