It sounds like the split ring has come out of the throw out bearing sleeve. 
 
I have had it happen to me. If there is any pressure on the shaft when you  
are pushing in the clutch, the shaft is now allowed to flex and the loose 
ring  will be on the shaft, but making a very strange noise.
