Regarding the sealer:
Use something that resists hot oil. RTV does not...
...although if you want it to come off easily after a disassembly it
IS the stuff to use, peels right off once exposed to a bit of hot
petroleum product...
It's ok for sticking a GOOD gasket to an oil pan or a valve cover etc
if the mating surfaces are dry and CLEAN, but I'd NOT rely on it to
stop/prevent an oil leak. On the other hand, brown Permatex gasket
sealer works pretty well with hot oil or even gasoline although it
has a grip like a leech once cured and won't come apart that easily.
I'm also a fan of cork gaskets... had some less than spectacular
luck with some of the recently available glossy black rubber gaskets,
some of which have cracked just while sitting in the package on the
shelf. They also tend to split and "squish out" from between the
mating surfaces rather easily if you snug them down a bit too tight,
where the cork gaskets just hunker down and flatten.
