Hi all...Would anyone know the best way to remove the oil pressure sending
unit wihout the special tool that Chevy recommends in the shop manual?
It looks like a socket that's skinnier on top to clear the fuel lines and
alternator. Would such a part be available at my FLAPS (haven't seen it
tho).
That is a tapered/stepped socket that is specially made to do just this. It
is, indeed, available at almost any parts store. You might still have to
loosen up the two big bolts that attach the alternator, and probably remove
the other bracket. This allows you to tilt the alternator away from the
switch for access. The "sender socket" is a standard resident of all Corvair
mechanic's tool boxes. It works on other cars as well. It is designed to
grip the switch tightly, but not distort the stamped outer shell. Distorting
the shell leads quickly to leakage/seepage. Go ahead and buy the socket. You
don't have to have a "Snap-On quality" tool here, you won't be using it
that often (I hope).
