Its probably not due to anti theft. I assume that for production runs in the
thousands when the production was set for a car and what opeions, paint
color, upholstery, options and that sort of stuff were assigned to the VIN
of the car. They would be organized down the assembly line by the partial
vin.

I know a guy who is a assembly line troubleshooter at FORD. He mentioned one
time that he got a call to go to a plant that had stopped its run of a
Mustang. When he got there, the different parts of the car were unmatched,
wrong interior parts, bumpers a different color. It all came down to someone
putting the wrong vin car in a spot on the line. Another identical but
reverse unmatched car was due to come down the line the next day.
