My '66 does the same thing ever since I've owned it (about 30 years). No amount of fluid changes etc. have helped. It takes about 2-3 sec when cold. But when hot, it will directly go from drive to reverse with no hesitation. It has about 120k miles on the PG

Probably the reverse piston seal is getting stuff and not sealing well. Try
some Seafoam Trans Tune and see if that helps...
