"Cowl shake", which is what you describe as occurring, is a problem that
has been around since the first open cars went over 35 mph -- a full
roll cage or conversion to a coupe (or is it "sedan") is the only real
solution for some cars -- other cars seem to be fine ...
Bill Stanley has better defined the problem(s). Like the first poster I
have had "wobble" on a '66 convertible and a '65 Corsa coupe when each was
first purchased. Both were related to badly worn front end parts to include
completely shot wheel bearings on the Corsa. The '66 convertible also had
cowl shake that never went away, but which was exacerbated if the
alignment, wheel balancing and front end weren't within spec. And all of my LM
cars have had a specific speed range with radial tires where there was a
transitional roughness you could feel at certain speeds (usually between 50 and
60 mph). And the Greenbrier, bless her, has always been smooth with radial
tires (must be that EM body strength :) ).
