IMHO, Lifters leak the oil pressure so they do not pump up and therefore CLICK or clatter. A friend showed me how to judge a weak one. You take a screwdriver or other suitable tool and try to push the rocker arm down while the engine runs at idle. If it starts to click, it may be loosing pressure. If it continues to click after you release pressure...it should stop after a click or three.
