As Corvairs were competing with Mustangs and Barracudas and Falcons (the  
early ones) Chevy has most of the power in the lower UPM range--especially 
with  the constricted head design.  But are you sure the ignition is working 
at  its best?  A good breaker plate, distributor shaft within tolerances and 
a  hot spark make the engine much stronger at higher UPMs.  Compared to a  
higher revving modern design the standard Corvair engine shows its design 
age,  but it still has a lot of punch at highway speeds.  If everything else is 
 optimal and you still aren't happy then there is a lot of information out 
there  on carb changes.
