Andy:
Not to dampen your enthusiasm but before you get too invested in this
project check your state motor vehicle registration laws. In some states
there are restrictions on "Kit Cars". Some states consider the year you
finish the vehicle as it's date of manufacture and require you to pass all
current regulations (seat belt, crash, emission, safety, etc.). Some states
allowed the vehicle to be registered as the original year and make of say
the frame with it's serial number. Hence the use of VW floor pans. I know
one fellow who built numerous kit cars (Lotus 7, Cheetah, Ultima) and I
warned him, he finally ran into troubles (on the Ultima) and had to register
it in a different state where he had a summer home and different laws.
Sometimes they let you register it but there is a 2500 mile per year limit
if emissions don't comply or similar restrictions. Restoring or owning an
existing, formerly registered and titled, kit car is a simpler option
sometimes. A Subscription to Hemmings or some of the online markets to find
something might be an option.
I assisted in the construction of an all wood experimental aircraft (Falco
FL8) and can suggest Aircraft Spruce.com as a source for woods, glues,
materials and information. Tony Bingelis wrote a series of books on
homebuilt aircraft construction that are excellent sources of techniques and
ideas for fabrication of ALL materials. Good luck.
