Jeff,  In my experience the rattling noise you describe has been  pressure 
plate or flywheel related.  Usually flywheel, but I did have one  pressure 
plate that was coming apart (and you could feel the unbalanced mass  rotating 
when you revved the car).  I'd plan on a complete clutch job in  the warmer 
Maine months ahead.  Best of luck.
