BUT...

Stateville Correctional Center is actually in Crest Hill, IL - just North of

Joliet

The actual driving distance is roughly 40 miles - prison to downtown Chicago

(and Lower Wacker Drive).


And that means what exactly (you're not that familiar with the movie!)!
Jake and Elwood were driving from "The Palace Hotel and Ballroom on Lake
Wassipamami" (non-existent) to the "Richard J. Daley Plaza" (with the
Picasso out front.a real place).so it's as far from Chicago as Dan Ackroyd
and John Landis wanted it to be!

Yes..it's 40 miles from Joliet to Downtown..but Jake and Elwood made that
trip at the beginning of the film!
